Working with a Staffing Agency

Flexible schedules, opportunities with great clients, a supportive staffing agency, and new fields to explore: what’s not to like about temporary work? But before you dive head-first into your career by temporary job placements, it’s important to take a step back and consider whether it’s the right fit for you.

To temp or not to temp...

Before relying on the universe for answers, let us offer you some guidance.

Should you try temp work? Let's look at what makes temporary work different from a long-term position:

Flexibility First and foremost, there’s flexibility. For some people, flexibility can be a positive part of their work experience! However, if time management and self-discipline are not your strong points, it might be difficult to be successful in a less structured, temporary position (especially one that requires working from home).

Involvement Involvement with the client is limited—don’t expect to be invited to holiday parties or a big birthday bash in your honor. While your work will be appreciated, it’s outside the clients scope to offer treatment like this. On the flip side, it’s important that you know how to work with your staffing agency. They’re your most direct line of support, and working with them effectively will make everyone happy. If you have questions outside of the project’s scope, ask your staffing agency about it first!

Knowing yourself and your strengths and weaknesses is vital for success in any part of life. So if something doesn’t sound like it will fit your needs, ask questions and make an informed decision based on what will make you as happy and successful as possible!

Key considerations Successful temporary workers must:

  • Understand and embrace the role of a temporary worker

  • Deliver results

  • Manage their time well

  • Communicate challenges early

  • Limit involvement with the client, as appropriate

  • Work effectively with their staffing agency

  • Take responsibility for career growth

  • Be flexible and independent self-starters

  • Understand and want to use their unique talents on the job
